Hospice & End of Life Care, Caregiver Specialty Training
The Hospice & End of Life Care Caregiver Specialty Training provides a comprehensive overview of how to provide care for patients as they near the end of their lives. It focuses on supporting caregivers and their families during the dying process, recognizing symptoms, and providing the necessary care. This course is directed toward paid caregivers, offering them not only the necessary knowledge but also the support and guidance they need to carry out their crucial roles. It is also beneficial for family members who are also providing care.

Developed by two hospice nurses, this training course for the 1:1 hospice caregiver is designed to be completed as mixed online and hands-on skills training in our training lab. The course aims to improve our services and empower our team to deliver the best care possible. Caregivers will be trained to feel comfortable and competent in end-of-life care, learning how to care for the client as well as their family. They will learn relaxation techniques, how to calm an agitated patient, and provide pharmacological and nonpharmacological techniques for pain relief. They will also learn about medicationd frequently used in hospice care and techniques to give medications to a client who cannot swallow and is unresponsive. Caregivers will still require delegation to administer these medications; however, they will feel more comfortable with the support. They will also be trained in managing care for a client during death, post-mortem bathing, and supporting the family. This training will empower our nurses to directly delegate medication management quickly and let caregivers feel comfortable in this line of work, while also enhancing our ability to educate and advance in the field of Hospice care.
